As an entrepreneur, enologist, and “wine and food edutainer,” Roland Birr is known for his demystifying presentations of wine and food—“edutainment,” as he calls it. He stages these unique events worldwide under the title “The Fifth Quarter”—his eponymous company network that comprises the business sectors of wine trade, culinary events, and authentic culinary wine tours. For more than two decades, he has staged these events with lasting effect and in a decelerated manner at his exclusive Culinary Outdoor Camps on open wood fires against the backdrop of breathtaking natural settings, be it amid the solitude and silence of Finnish forests, the Mongolian steppe, or the Transylvanian wilderness, or off the beaten track in the pristine natural setting of southern Africa. In 2015, he expanded his culinary destinations to include Culinary Fishing, combining his grounding portrayal of authentic culinary arts with the supreme discipline of fly-fishing in Iceland, Finland, Denmark, and Mongolia.
